He has given such a fantastic body of work. I am sitting alone at home and thinking about him. Unfortunately, this is such a time that I can’t even go and meet his family, share their grief and pay my last respect to him. I can’t imagine what his entire family must eb going through. It must be so very traumatic for his children Riddhima and Ranbir. He would sometimes say, maine ek do film ki, achha role tha, mujhe laga tu karegi nahi!
I would sometimes jump into him asking why are we not doing any film together and we would have a banter about it. It is not an easy time to talk about him like this but he is really a person I would miss as a friend, as a co-star. Today, I am going through my old messages with him, our conversations. I had recently sent him a message wishing him good health. We would text each other on occasions like birthdays, Diwali, New Year and other festivals. When I last met him, he was looking so good and nice. He enjoyed everything from his work to even being on Twitter! Sometimes he wrote very meaningful and great comments (on social media). He would always reply to texts or WhatsApp messages with something whacky or funny. It has been an immortal creation of R D Burman featuring Rishi Kapoor and myself.Īs a person, he was somebody with an amazing sense of humour. People would even convey the same on Insta and Twitter. Anywhere in the world I have traveled to, people would tell me “Yah vaada raha” is one of their favourite songs. We have done quite a number of films together. He really was a complete actor and I think the most shining star of the Kapoor family. But the variety of roles he did - whether it is playing a villain or a bad guy or an old man, any kind of role, put him in any role and he would shine in it.
All through his life he had this romantic and loverboy image. Rishi really is one of the finest, most effortless and natural actors we had. They are my two co-stars from whom I have really learnt a lot.
I have always said Rishi Kapoor and Kamal Haasan. Over the years people would ask me which co-star have you been a fan of or admired. All the songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle under music direction of RD Burman are evergreen classics : Milgayee Aaj Kuch Lehren, Aesa Kabhi Huwa Nahin, Jeene Ko Toh Jeete Hai Sabhi but the best of the lot is the title song TU TU HAI WOHI DILNE JISE APNA KAHAN TU HAI JAHAN MAIN HOON WAHAN ABE TOH JEH JEENA TERE BIN HAI SAZAA which gets remixed even today. He really was one of my favourite actors. Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan had dubbed for both actresses and it works very very well. Nice thing is that Poonam and Tina have the same voice in the movie. Rishi cant explain why but he wants to be close to her not knowing Tina is actually Poonam. When Rishi and Tina meet something happens. Shammi Kapoor, a doctor, performs plastic surgery on Poonam and after he does she becomes Tina Munim. Rishi thinks she has died and Raakhee has her sent away so that Rishi can get married to another rich girl Sarika (okay so the movie isn't perfect). Before they get married they get in a car accident and Poonam her face get smashed. At first Raakhee objects but finally agrees. He falls in love with a poor singer, Poonam Dhillon. Rishi Kapoor is the son of a rich Raakhee Gulzar. But then again we are talking about Rishi Kapoor so that should be normal, the guy is always good even if the movie isn't. I mean the acting is superb, the casting is very good, the cast itself is phenomenal. Everything in this movie just fell into place. This movie by Ramesh Behl (Rose movies) is actually one of the best remakes Bollywood has ever made of a Hollywood movie. Rakesh Bedi lends good support, rest are okay Shammi Kapoor is superb, Raakhee is superb as Rishi's mother(though she was few years older to him, strangely in the same year she played mother to the older Amitabh Bachchan). Direction is good Music by RD Burman is awesome,The duo of Kishore and Asha sing all the songs, Tu Tu Hai Wohi is very famous till today, while other songs too are superb Rishi Kapoor is superb in his role, he plasy the romantic lover superbly Poonam Dhillon and Tina Munim are both superb in their roles, thankfully the director got their voices dubbed by Jaya Bachchan so that one voice could be used throughout. The film does have some flaws like in the first half, 4-5 songs come in quick succession but thats perhaps due to the twist in the story, The director explores the love story superbly, the mother's track too is well handled. Yeh Vaada Raha is one of Bollywood's first films to explore Plastic Surgery, The film is a remake of THE PROMISE(1979) The film has a good story and it's well handled, the twist in the story is well handled, the emotions too are well captured.
